A corn is localised thickening of the horny layers of skin and the apex of the corn presses upon the inner layer of skin and soft parts thereby producing pain. Commonly it is found on the toes and soles of the feet.Callosties are thickening of the hoeny layer of skin occuring,as a result of irritation on the soles, palms and other parts. Occasionally a corn may be formed on a callosity. Tight fitting narrow shoes are common cause for corns and callosities in the soles.
Preventions is better than cure. As mentioned earlier, broad and little loose fitting shoes with loose socks will prevent further damage and help in healing. Instead of heard soles for shoes and slippers, soft foam rubber is beneficial. Examine the shoes and chappals for hard points pressing the soles of feet. Soft rubber slippers are ideal and removing a part of slipper sole where the corn exerts its pressure will relieve the pressure on the corn and much relief is obtained by this procedure. Sterile blade or corn razor can be used to shave off the corn after soaking it with soap and water for sometime. Care should be taken to see that blood is not coming out and cleaning is benificial.Corn adhesives available in the market can be tried. Sometimes strong acids are used.
